Jukwaa Mazoa/Sandi Clark presentation of "Having Our Say: the Delany Sister's First 100 Years," a play by Emily Mann is about America's people. It demonstrates how vision, tenacity and courage can help determined people prevail over seemingly insurmountable odds. This is a testament to the human spirit, wherever it is found.
America fell in love with the Delany sisters when they published their autobiography in the fall of 1991, at ages 101 and 103. The press made a fuss, Oprah made a fuss, and the "Having Our Say" remained on the bestseller list for more than six months. Mann's play, which brought their extraordinary memoirs to life on stage, followed in 1995.
Jukwaa Mazoa will be presenting "Having Our Say: the Delany Sisters' First 100 Years" with seacoast actress Sandi Clark (founder of Jukwaa Mazoa) playing Bessie the younger sister, age 101. Denise Richardson from Pittsfield, NH plays the older sister Sadie. Denise performs her comedy routine Madame HaHa up and down the East Coast.
The Delany sisters are women we all know: our aunts, our teachers (Miss Sadie) our doctors (Dr. Bessie is a dentist). We follow then in Harlem during the great depression and through two world wars as they resolutely obtain their education in an environment unwelcoming to women. This is a story of a family working together building a good life.... "good citizens and good American's."
Mann sets the play in the Delany apartment with the audience as their guests. It's as if we've just come for tea, and have asked them to tell us what it was like to live through one hundred years of American history.
"Having Our Say" is our history. It celebrates women and men, African-Americans, our country, and the indomitable human spirit.
This play is yet another in a long line of Jukwaa Mazoa productions that is a must see!
